•Children and adolescents who have more experience in trauma than ordinary kids could imagine.
•Active Duty, Reserve, and Retired Veterans. You probably know that many US Military personnel experience panic, anxiety, rage, hopelessness, despondency, and a need to isolate themselves from other people (typically those with whom they were closest to before being deployed).
•People in crisis mode. This is someone who experiences something unexpected (or expected and unwanted), painfully unpleasant, and little or no clarity on what to do with whatever life handed to them. Clinical treatment tends to be shorter when compared to other reasons people seek therapy.
•Spirituality as a specific area of concern as well as embedding it into the generalized counseling process. Over 80% of people who seek counseling report that they would like the clinician to assist in connecting a core belief, such as spiritual identity, with the primary reason for counseling.
•Complicated mourning. Grief and loss are universal and unpleasant feelings. For some, “moving on” is more challenging than they expected it to be.

My preferred method of counseling is based on Choice Theory—in simple terms, this theory asserts that people have a vague definition of a “quality world” in which they would like to “live”. This theory also asserts that the choices we make, regardless of our perception of the magnitude of any of these choices, will move us closer to or further away from the quality world we want. This theory is designed to help people to think about the choices they have made, are making, or will make and how relevant these choices are in relation to their quality world.
Due to the confrontational structure of Choice Theory, some people find it cold and indifferent if the clinician does not properly utilize it. My job is to keep us away from those reactions. If we are working together, expect me to ask you for clarification when I can’t see how some of the things you are doing relate to your definition of a quality world.
I know that there are limits to every theory, so I have an obligation to you and the science of counseling to have a few other treatment options in which I have experience and that I believe are a valid alternative to Choice Theory. These alternatives are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), and Solution Focused Therapy (sometimes referred to as Brief Therapy).
I would like to believe that I can be equally useful to every person who is seeking change. Unfortunately, I know that I can’t do this. No one can. Thus, based on our collaborative assessment of the counseling process, I will always provide you with a list of other counselors who I believe are competent, person centered, and with whom you may experience a more productive counseling endeavor.
